Rome Fiumicino Airport Leads Europe in Next-Generation Security

Fiumicino Airport security innovation

Setting a New Standard in Aviation Security

Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, better known as Fiumicino, is once again proving why it stands among the world’s leading aviation hubs. Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) recently highlighted on FRANCE 24 how a series of security upgrades—including AI integration, new screening systems, and smoother passenger policies—are transforming the airport experience.

One of the standout innovations is the adoption of the C3 Smiths Detection scanners, placing Fiumicino at the forefront of compliance with the July 26 European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) directive. Thanks to this technology, travelers can now carry liquids in hand luggage of up to two liters per container, eliminating one of the most common passenger frustrations at checkpoints.

Recognized Worldwide for Security Excellence

These advancements are not only improving efficiency but also winning global recognition. ADR Security, the company responsible for implementing these measures, earned the World’s Best Airport for Security Processing 2023 award from Skytrax. It was a landmark acknowledgment that underscores how innovation in Rome is setting the pace for aviation hubs across Europe.

A Passenger-First Approach

Beyond technology, Italy is also softening traditional boarding controls. For Schengen and domestic flights, identity checks have been relaxed, reducing congestion and offering a smoother, stress-free flow through departure areas. Combined with next-gen scanning systems, this move reflects a passenger-centric strategy that balances efficiency with safety.

Voices Shaping the Future of Security

In the FRANCE 24 feature, Paolo Giannobile, Accountable Manager at Fiumicino Airport, and Cristina Panniello, Head of Airside Operations, detailed how ADR is investing in cutting-edge technologies to enhance both safety and passenger comfort. Their vision reflects a broader trend in aviation: making airports not just gateways to destinations, but experiences in themselves.
