Lufthansa Group is reportedly moving forward with plans to increase its ownership of ITA Airways—Italy’s flag carrier successor to Alitalia—from the current 41% to as much as 90% by mid-2026. According to recent reports, Lufthansa would pay about €325 million, plus an additional performance-based sum of €100 million to secure the extra shares.
ITA Airways has been a part of Lufthansa’s extended network since early 2025, with gradual operational and alliance changes already underway—including a move to the Star Alliance system in 2026. This proposed stake increase would deepen that integration and allow Lufthansa more direct influence over strategy, route planning, fleet modernization, and customer experience.
Why this matters:
- Network expansion & connectivity: With stronger ownership, Lufthansa can better align ITA routes with its network, potentially improving connections between Italy and the U.S., Asia, and other key global destinations.
- Market competitiveness: ITA’s stronger backing by a European giant may lead to service upgrades, better on-time performance, and improved traveler confidence.
- Regulatory and governmental oversight: While Italy retains some control, the deal hinges on performance targets, profitability metrics, and meeting regulatory requirements.
That said, the deal is not yet finalized. Final agreements are expected in April-May 2026, contingent on ITA’s continued financial improvement and regulatory approvals.
