Piazza del Popolo has long been known as the northern gateway to Rome. For centuries, it welcomed travelers arriving from the north of Europe via the Via Flaminia. The square is framed by its striking elliptical design, perfected in the 19th century by architect Giuseppe Valadier, and features the Flaminio Obelisk, twin Baroque churches—Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto—and the scenic Pincio terrace.
